Tooth Colored Fillings & Metal Free Dentistry

What is a Composite Filling (White Filling)?

A composite filling is a tooth-colored plastic and glass mixture used to restore decayed teeth. Composites are also used for cosmetic improvements of the smile by changing the color of the teeth or reshaping disfigured teeth.

the composites used in our clinic are BPA Free composite materials Venus Diamond and also the composite of choice recommended by the IAOMT from Voco Admira. For build ups under crowns and for certain situations we use a non BPA Glasionomer cement material that is also BPA free called GCP a Glass carbomer filling material that is produced in Holland.

How is a composite placed?

Following preparation, the dentist places the composite in layers, typically using a light specialized to harden each layer. When the process is finished, the dentist will shape the composite to fit the tooth. The dentist then polishes the composite to prevent staining and early wear.

What are the advantages of composites?

Aesthetics are the main advantage of composites, since dentists can blend shades to create a color nearly identical to that of the actual tooth. Composites bond to the tooth to support the remaining tooth structure, which helps to prevent breakage and insulate the tooth from excessive temperature changes. The Filling is bonded to the tooth which gives additional strength to the tooth.

What are the disadvantages?

After receiving a composite, a patient may experience postoperative sensitivity. Also, the shade of the composite can change slightly if the patient drinks tea, coffee or other staining foods.

Metal Free Dentistry

Inlays and Onlays

When the decay or the fracture of the tooth is too extensive to be restored with the conventional composite tooth coloured filling we choose the inlay which offers the least invasive treatment option and in addition offers more strength for the longevity of the restoration.

The tooth is prepared in such a way that the indirect restoration is done in the laboratory and later cemented on the tooth. In the meantime while the inlay is being fabricated in the lab the cavity is being filled with a temporary material to protect the tooth and the nerve. As materials we use ceramic or zirconium depending on the situation. The shade shade of the restoration is chosen to blend in with the natural colour of your teeth.

Metal Free Crowns

A crown, as its name suggests, is a covering that sits over the top of the tooth. Crowns are used in many different scenarios as they protect, cover, seal and strengthen your teeth.  We use only crowns that have no metal content. We use Zirconia and ceramic as materials.

Emax is a type of all-ceramic crown with an appealing translucent color which is combined with extra strength and durability. This crown is made of lithium disilicate ceramic: this is a top grade material which has been harvested for its toughness, durability and opaque qualities which makes it great choice for strength and aesthetics plus it is considered a breakthrough in dental crown technology. You get a glass ceramic crown which is tough and enduring but delicate in appearance.

Metal Free Bridges

Bridges are used to replace a missing tooth. The two posts on either side have to be prepared (reduced in size) enough to fit a crown on each one. Models are made for the lab to fabricate the restoration. In the meantime if possible and necessary the prepared teeth and the gap are being temporarily covered until the final restoration is ready. The bridge is made to blend in with the natural look of the patients teeth and after thorough examination of the fit and the shade is cemented with a final cement.
